Once renowned, the Repulse Bay Hotel was an illustrious and prestigious destination, rich in historical heritage, and a gathering place for celebrities and intellectuals from around the world. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Eileen Chang, a giant of Chinese literature. Repulse Bay The Pulse is proud to present the exhibition 'Eileen Chang's Repulse Bay: Love and Fragile Beauty', exploring the deep connection between the literary master and this landmark hotel. The exhibition will be held from 1 October 2025 to 1 March 2026, inviting visitors to traverse the history of the Repulse Bay Hotel and Eileen Chang's literary brilliance, understanding how the hotel became a source of inspiration and influenced her creative process throughout the changing times.
Eileen Chang is hailed as one of the greatest writers of modern Chinese literature. During her time in Hong Kong as a student, she frequently visited the Repulse Bay Hotel, drawing inspiration from its opulent ambiance. The hotel's terrace restaurant even became the classic setting for her renowned work, 'Love in a Fallen City', a testament to a romantic yet tumultuous love story set amidst a chaotic world. Through meticulously curated exhibition areas, visitors will embark on a journey to witness Eileen Chang's arrival in the perilous city of Hong Kong, delving into her enduring literary perspective that bridges the golden age with present emotions.
The exhibition will showcase a plethora of precious artifacts, including a 1941 hotel menu, historical photographs, and never-before-seen materials, chronicling the glorious history of the Repulse Bay Hotel. Additionally, the exhibition will feature a special display of Eileen Chang's manuscript and letter replicas generously provided by Hong Kong Metropolitan University, offering a rare glimpse into her inner world and illustrating how the ambiance of the Repulse Bay Hotel nurtured her exploration of desire and the pursuit of fleeting beauty in an impermanent world.
